Real World Product Photography Tips

  1. Invest in a small set of "pot lights" to light your product and show it off at it's best.
  2. Use a "digi-tent" to reduce shadows and set your camera to "macro" for the best close up shots.
  3. Set your camera at the highest resolution setting.  That way, if you need to enlarge the image for a trade show or to print a brochure, you are ready to go.

How to shoot professional looking digital product shots

A small, inexpensive digital camera can take fairly good shots of your product.  If you follow these tips, your image will be good enough to place on your website and might also be good enough for your printed brochure or advertisement.

Natural light is always best but if you are shooting indoors, be sure to light up  the area around your product as much as possible.  Details on your product will "pop", especially if you are shooting small, intricate pieces such as beads, jewelry, etc. if the area around your product is well lit.

You can purchase small "shooting" tables on e-bay which will allow you to attach lights to either side of the table in addition to lighting underneath the object.  Remember, the more light you have on your product, the better your shot will be. Placing your camera on a small tripod will also produce better shots and will reduce "camera shake".

Be sure to read the user manual which came with your digital camera.  Some camera retailers offer classes on how to use your camera or you can sign up at your local technical college to learn professional tips and techniques.
Plain backgrounds are best when shooting products.  Do not clutter the background with images or your product will be lost.  White is best but light blue and gray are also a good choice.  If your images will be placed on your website, try to shoot against the same background color for each shot in order to maintain consistency.

What's in it for me when hiring Marketing Xperience?

  • A high quality digital photo tells the story about the product's value for the price in an instant.  As they say, "You don't get a second chance to make a good first impression."
  • A professional photographer gives your product a valuable edge against the competition for a very reasonable cost.
  • If you are struggling to obtain high quality images for your marketing materials or website, you should consider hiring a professional photographer.  Hiring a professional will cut your marketing budget in the long run because you will not have to spend time shooting and re-shooting in an attempt to show the product's best assets.
  • It's better to hire a professional for the job rather than to settle for images which will not show your product in the best light.  Your potential customer has three seconds to make a judgment on your product and if it is difficult to see what you are selling it is possible that your customer will move on to purchase another product.
