Real World Marketing Tips for Selecting Promotional Products

  1. Who is your target audience?  Define your advertising promotional product and tailor it to your audience accordingly.
  2. Decide what message you want to convey with your promotional product giveaway. Be sure it is appealing and appropriate for your target audience.  Always tie your promotional product back to your brand or theme.
  3. Be sure to give away promotional products which are useful and which the recipient will want to keep.  Many times companies give away products which finish up in the bottom of a desk drawer or with a family member who is not always the ideal customer who will reinforce your brand.
  4. Consider purchasing special gifts just for your "A" list or VIP customers.  This will show your special customers just how important they are to you and allow you to keep your budget low.  You can select up to three categories of promotional items to give away to A, B and C customers.
  5. Use a copywriter if you need a strong catch phrase to be integrated into your promotional product.

How to select and purchase the right promotional products for your trade show or event.

There are many reasons to purchase promotional products and a million products to choose from for each marketing campaign. Initially, decide on your budget, how you will give away your promotional product and who the recipient will be.

You can tie your promotional product in with your trade show theme.  For instance, a compressed air manufacturer purchased a booth at a woodworking show.  They selected a wooden baseball bat pen to give away to everyone who came to their booth with a pre show mailed postcard which featured an image of the pen on the front and verbiage on the back of the postcard which tied in with their trade show booth.  The promotional item was a great success.

The internet is a great venue for researching items to give away as promotional products but beware of companies with whom you are not familiar in the event you are attempting to purchase a specialty item which has to be personalized at the last minute.  A promotional products company who is familiar with the delivery times and reputation of several manufacturers is your best bet.  It may cost a few more cents for the product but at least you know that you are dealing with a company who can produce your promotional product and deliver on time.  Nothing is worse than arriving at your tradeshow booth and following up on your promotional product giveaway at the last minute only to be told that they are lagging behind in production and they will not be able to get your product to you until after the show.

Beware of companies who offer big promises but who cannot possibly deliver.  Only a seasoned promotional products company would be able to tell you which companies to steer away from.

Remember there are often minimum order restrictions placed on promotional products and be sure to order your promotional products at least six weeks before you will need them.  Many times there is a long waiting period or rush charges are incurred if you do not abide by the manufacturer's standard production time.

  • Your customers will remember your brand name long after your event is over if you give away a promotional product which is memorable.
  • Your name will perpetually be in front of your customers (especially in the case of pens, a popular promotional item).
  • Your logo is seen by your customer and potential customer's eyes many times a day.
  • Depending on you're the promotional product you give away, your customer will get a "warm fuzzy" feeling about your company, products and services!
